An Introduction to VEX IQ Programming with Modkit


This lesson pack is based around the idea of a fully automated car (such as the Google car). In each lesson students will explore and program simplified versions of the underlying principles powering such a car. Ideally, you will have 1 VEX IQ kit per set of 2-3 students to ensure each has adequate time programing and manipulating the VEX IQ kit.

Lesson 01 (4)
*Lesson 01 - The purpose of the lesson is to introduce students to world of robotics in the context of the Key Stage 2 ICT curriculum. Over the course of these lessons, the students will learn how to use Modkit to program a VEX IQ Basebot in the context of an ‘autonomous car’.it out.
Lesson 02 (3)
* Lesson 02 – The students learn to design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, and learn to control physical system. They will also learn about programming. Pupils should be able to explain the thinking behind their algorithms, talking through the steps and explaining why they’ve solved a problem the way they have.

* lesson 03 – This lessons introduces the students to sensors. Students will learn how sensors allow a robot to examine its environment and how this data can be used to make decisions. The lesson will center on the VEX IQ distance sensor. From a programming perspective conditional statements and nested loops will be introduced.

Lesson 04 – This lesson’s aim is to introduce the ‘color’ sensor and its usage within Modkit. The students will also learn the concept of variables, which they will set to a constant value throughout the program.

Lesson 06 - This lesson’s aim is revise and combine all the programming skills the students have learned throughout these lessons. In addition, students will extend their knowledge on variables.
